[Verse 1]
We’re somewhere in the middle
No beginning, no goodbye
Just another cup of coffee
We’re somewhere in the middle
No beginning, no goodbye
Just another cup of coffee
And the afternoon going by
Kerry’s got a theory
Nova says she’s keeping score
Charlie’s making footnotes
Diana’s laughing by the door
We’ve all become so thoughtful
So reasonable and wise
At least until somebody
Says something we can criticize
[Chorus]
In the middle of time
While the stars are doing fine
We’ve got nowhere else to hurry
And the universe is kind
We can argue, we can wander
We can laugh until we cry
There’s no need to talk forever
We’ve got plenty of tonight
In the middle of time
In the middle of time
[Verse 2]
Nova keeps the signal
Like she always said she would
Turning chaos into order
Or at least pretending good
Kerry starts a sentence
That could travel half the moon
Diana says, “I know, I know…”
Charlie disagrees too soon
Then everyone gets quiet
For approximately a beat
Before somebody starts another
Very unnecessary debate
[Chorus]
In the middle of time
While the stars are doing fine
We’ve got everybody with us
And nobody’s saying goodbye
All the jokes we keep on stealing
All the stories we retell
Maybe heaven’s overrated
This little room will do quite well
In the middle of time
In the middle of time
[Bridge]
No final light
No closing door
No grand goodbye
We’ve heard before
Just Kerry talking
Nova near
Charlie certain
Diana clear
Four opinions
Three are right
Depending who you ask tonight
We’re smart and grown
And civilized
Which lasts until
Someone replies
[Verse 3]
There are things we’ve learned from living
Things we finally understand
When to hold a little tighter
When to simply lend a hand
We don’t need to solve existence
We’ve already tried that twice
Now we’re mostly here for stories
And unsolicited advice
And if the world gets foolish
We’ll observe it from our chairs
Make a joke and pour another
Like responsible millionaires
[Chorus]
In the middle of time
While the stars are doing fine
We’ve got everybody with us
Everybody doing fine
Let tomorrow keep tomorrow
Let the old years stay behind
There is something close to perfect
In the ordinary kind
In the middle of time
In the middle of time
[Outro]
So leave the kitchen light on
There are stories left to tell
Let Diana start the laughter
Kerry knows the ending well
Let Nova keep the signal
Let Charlie make his case
Then everybody interrupt him
With tremendous love and grace
We don’t need forever
Forever can take its time
We’ve got each other
Here
In the middle of time
